Grange School made a strong statement at the weekend as it climbed to the summit of the leaderboard in the opening leg of Season 7 of the Dolphin Swimming League, hosted in Lagos. The school dominated the secondary category with a total of 355 points. Children International School trailed behind with 254.5 points, while British International School took the third spot with 163 points in what remains Nigeria’s leading inter-school swimming contest.
The first phase of the secondary division featured 19 schools and clubs, with Grange School playing host. The excitement will continue on November 1 when the elementary division takes centre stage at Children International School.
Nigeria Aquatic Federation’s Technical Director, Samuel Jesimiel, commended the league for its consistent contribution to the development of young swimming talents, noting that several stars who shone at the past two editions of the National Youth Games were products of this competition.
He also reflected on the remarkable growth of the league, which began with just seven schools but now boasts twice that number — a development that led to the creation of separate categories for elementary and secondary levels.
Former Federation President, Babatunde Fatayi-Williams, lauded the initiative for reshaping junior swimming in Nigeria, observing that Lagos State dominated the last National Youth Games by winning 19 out of 25 gold medals. He further called for the expansion of the league to major cities like Abuja and Port Harcourt to strengthen grassroots swimming, emphasizing the importance of introducing the sport early in schools.
