Political strategist and public affairs analyst, Professor Udenta Udenta, has condemned the recent defections of some governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing their actions as “cowardly and gutless.”
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, Prof. Udenta, who is also the founding National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), dismissed speculation that the PDP is on the verge of collapse. He insisted that the party remains “vibrant with life” and that its strength is rooted in the people, not in political elites seeking personal gain.
“If you decide to use the PDP as a platform, the party is vibrant with life, even though there’s a shift in terms of that upper crust of the political elite — the governors — who for some reason decide to say, ‘okay, we call it a day, we’re going to join APC where we think that their gluttony will power our own ambition,’” Udenta said.
He further criticized the motives behind the defections, accusing the governors of abandoning principle for political survival. “This is an act cowardly and gutless,” he declared.
Addressing earlier remarks he made about the possible political return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Udenta clarified that his comments were based on political analysis rather than any insider knowledge.
“When I spoke partially about the prospect of the former president, I didn’t speak as a spokesperson. He has not declared a political context in the election. Even his membership of the party is only for him to clarify,” he explained.
As the PDP continues to battle internal challenges and high-profile defections, Udenta’s comments reflect the frustration among party loyalists who believe the party’s identity and relevance transcend individual political ambitions.
