The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday, administered the oath of office to two newly elected senators who recently won their seats in by-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The new lawmakers are Barrister Joseph Ikpea, representing Edo Central Senatorial District under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Emmanuel Nwachukwu Chibuzor, representing Anambra South Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Both senators took their oaths during plenary at the National Assembly complex, Abuja.
According to official records, Ikpea replaces Senator Monday Okpebholo, who vacated the seat after his emergence as Governor of Edo State, while Chibuzor succeeds the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the former representative of Anambra South.
The Acting Clerk to the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, administered both the oath of office and the oath of allegiance to the new senators. Following the swearing-in, the lawmakers shook hands with the Presiding Officer, Senate President Akpabio, and presented their Certificates of Return issued by INEC.
The brief ceremony was witnessed by several dignitaries, including former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, former Edo State Deputy Governor and current Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, Dr. Lee Ikpea, elder brother to the new Edo Central Senator, and Edo State Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Samson Osaigie.
With their swearing-in, both senators are now expected to resume full legislative duties as the Red Chamber reconvenes for plenary.
