Tension gripped Ebonyi State University on Tuesday after a student was shot during a Students’ Union Government (SUG) election. The incident occurred as results were being announced, prompting chaos and leading to the swift arrest of three suspects by the Ebonyi State Police Command.
According to police spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu, the suspects allegedly fired a gunshot to disrupt the crowd during the final stages of the election process. The bullet struck a student, who was immediately rushed to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for urgent medical treatment.
A locally made pistol believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered at the scene.
Ukandu confirmed that the suspects are currently in police custody and will be arraigned upon the conclusion of investigations. He praised the prompt action of officers present at the venue, which prevented further escalation and ensured the arrest of the individuals involved.
The university authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident or the condition of the injured student.
This incident raises renewed concerns over the increasing militarization and violence in student politics across Nigerian universities.
