The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has launched a new registration drive for athletes across the state, introducing a dedicated portal to streamline the management of their database.
Following the state’s recent success at the night edition of the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, the commission has started integrating junior athletes into senior ranks, while also inviting senior athletes who wish to continue representing Lagos to re-register. This initiative signals LSSC’s commitment to strengthening the pipeline of talent and ensuring that promising athletes have a clear path from grassroots to elite competition.
The registration exercise commenced last Monday at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere and will run until November 1. The move is expected to reach hundreds of athletes from various disciplines, giving them an opportunity to formalize their registration and gain access to enhanced support systems.
Director General of LSSC, Lekan Fatodu, said the initiative is aimed at modernizing the identification and management of athletic talent in the state.
“We are also bringing innovation to the process of engaging and empowering our future talents. I believe this is the first of its kind across the country. We want to have an identity and properly registered intakes in order to avoid a situation where our athletes will be anonymous.
“We are confident that this initiative will bring significant improvements in sports development, identifying gaps and areas for enhancement. The program applies to both junior and senior athletes, building on the success achieved with U-15 athletes, where parental engagement was crucial.”
Fatodu added that the reforms would include biometric data capture to enable accurate profiling, easier access to sporting facilities, performance monitoring, and long-term career support for athletes, particularly as they transition to life beyond competitive sports.
Beyond the administrative improvements, LSSC hopes the portal will also serve as a tool for scouting, coaching development, and tracking athletes’ progress over time. By creating a centralized database, the commission aims to reduce inefficiencies, eliminate duplicate registrations, and ensure that every athlete is accounted for in state programs.
With this approach, LSSC aims to professionalize athlete management, ensure proper tracking of talent, and create a structured framework to nurture sports development across Lagos State. The initiative represents a strategic effort to sustain the state’s competitive edge, build stronger teams for national competitions, and offer young athletes a platform to reach their full potential while preparing them for careers in and beyond sports.
