Tensions flared at the National Assembly on Tuesday as security operatives tear-gassed and dispersed a crowd of supporters gathered to welcome Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan back to the Senate, following the expiration of her six-month suspension.
The Kogi Central senator arrived at the Assembly complex with a large group of supporters, many of whom had travelled from Kogi State. However, she was reportedly denied entry, triggering a confrontation with security agents who responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Several supporters sustained injuries in the ensuing chaos and were rushed to nearby hospitals by emergency responders. Eyewitnesses described a heavy security presence and a tense atmosphere, noting that the peaceful gathering quickly turned violent.
This incident comes amid earlier reports that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s office had been reinstated, raising public expectations of her smooth return to legislative duties.
“It was supposed to be a historic return for her, but it turned into a nightmare,” a National Assembly staff member told reporters.
Reacting to the incident, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan condemned the use of force against her supporters. “These are innocent Nigerians who came in peace; they deserve better,” she said.
The confrontation has drawn criticism from civil society organizations and political commentators, who are now calling on the Senate leadership to investigate the incident and prevent future occurrences.
