September 18, 2025 Nigerian music legend Innocent Ujah Idibia, famously known as 2Baba, turns 50 today. With over two decades of musical excellence, 2Baba remains a towering figure whose work has defined generations and inspired countless artists.
Born in Jos, 2Baba’s musical journey began in Enugu, where he formed the Plantashun Boiz with Blackface and Faze in the late ’90s. In 2004, he launched his solo career with the album Face 2 Face, featuring the iconic hit “African Queen.” The song became a global phenomenon and a cultural milestone, even earning a spot in the Hollywood film Phat Girlz.
2005: Won MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act, 2007: Became the first Nigerian to win a MOBO Award2011: Won BET Award for Best African Act a first for Nigeria, Multiple MTV Africa Music Awards including Best Male and Artist of the Year, 2016: Inducted into the Headies Hall of Fame, 2022: Conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON)
2Baba is more than a musician, he’s a vocal advocate for change. Through his Vote Not Fight campaign, he championed peaceful elections and youth involvement in governance. As a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, he also advocates for refugees and displaced persons.
He holds an honorary PhD from Obafemi Awolowo University, and currently serves as a Special Adviser to the Governor of Benue State on arts and youth development.
From love ballads to conscious music, 2Baba’s artistry continues to transcend generations. His influence can be seen in the work of many contemporary Nigerian stars who cite him as a major inspiration.
