Osimhen Starts Ankle Sprain Recovery Process

Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has picked up an ankle injury while representing the Super Eagles in their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, raising concerns for both country and club.

The highly anticipated clash, held in Uyo on Saturday, started with the Napoli legend-turned-Galatasaray star leading the attack. But midway through the first half, his evening was cut short after a heavy challenge from Rwandan defender Claude Niyomugabo. Osimhen was unable to continue and limped off in visible discomfort, leaving Nigeria fans worried.

Initial medical checks by the Super Eagles’ team doctors suggested that the injury was nothing more than a shin bruise. However, the situation took a different turn the following morning, as the striker complained of increased pain and discomfort. This development forced the Nigerian Football Federation to exclude him from the travelling squad to Bloemfontein, where the team faces South Africa in another crucial qualifier on Tuesday.

With doubts surrounding his fitness, Osimhen returned to Turkey to undergo further examinations with his club. On Tuesday, Galatasaray issued an official update through their team doctor, Dr. Yener Slim, who revealed that scans showed a moderate ankle sprain, with ligament strain and internal bleeding. Slim added that treatment had already started, though no clear timeline was given for the striker’s return.

The absence of Osimhen, Nigeria’s most lethal forward, was evident during the game against Rwanda. Cyriel Dessers, who replaced him in the first half, struggled to find his rhythm and made little impact against the Rwandan defence. However, the breakthrough came early in the second half when Tolu Arokodare was introduced. The lanky forward made his presence felt almost immediately, scoring in the 51st minute to seal a 1–0 win and keep Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive.

For Nigeria coach Finidi George, the three points were a relief, but the injury to his star striker leaves a big hole in his attacking options as the qualifiers progress. Osimhen’s physicality, pace, and goalscoring ability have made him the focal point of the Super Eagles’ frontline, and his absence will be felt in upcoming fixtures.

Attention has now shifted back to Istanbul, where Galatasaray await further updates on their record signing. The Turkish champions are preparing for a key Super Lig clash against Eyüpspor this weekend, but Osimhen remains a doubt. His absence could disrupt Galatasaray’s momentum, as the 25-year-old has already proven to be a key figure in their campaign.

Osimhen joined Galatasaray permanently this summer following a successful loan spell from Napoli. The transfer, worth €75 million, made him the club’s most expensive signing and underlined their determination to compete at the highest level domestically and in Europe. So far, he has scored two goals in three league appearances, helping his side maintain a perfect start to the season with 12 points from four matches.

For both Galatasaray and Nigeria, Osimhen’s recovery is now a priority. While the club hopes to have him back quickly to continue their title charge, the Super Eagles will be counting on his return for the long road to the 2026 World Cup. Until then, fans can only wait and hope that their talisman shakes off the injury without long-term effects.
