The Federal Governmentt has announced a revised national curriculum for primary, secondary, and technical schoolsaimed at preparing Nigerian students for modern global demands.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa. The review was developed in collaboration with key educational bodies, including:Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC),Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC),National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)

Prof. Ahmad emphasized that the review wasn’t just about cutting down subjects but about restructuring content to make learning more effective and manageable.

New Subject Structure:Primary 1–3: 9 to 10 subjects,Primary 4–6: 10 to 12 subjects,Junior Secondary: 12 to 14 subjects,Senior Secondary: 8 to 9 subjects
Technical Schools: 9 to 11 subjects

“The revised curricula will reduce content overload and create more learning time for students,” Ahmad noted.

Although a specific rollout date was not provided, the Ministry confirmed that the new curricula will be implemented gradually, with strict monitoring from education agencies to ensure a smooth transition.

It’s worth recalling that earlier this year, Dr. Alausa postponed the start of the revised basic education curriculum to September 2025, after his predecessor, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had scheduled its launch for January 2025. The new basic curriculum includes a requirement for pupils to acquire at least two practical skills.
