The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has commended its candidates who participated in the recently concluded by-elections, praising their courage and resilience despite facing intimidation, vote-buying, and electoral delays.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Chairman, Comrade Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, the SDP described its candidates as “heroes of democracy” whose sacrifices and grassroots mobilization efforts remain the backbone of the party’s campaign machinery.
However, the party raised concerns over what it described as the activities of “unscrupulous elements” posing as leaders and attempting to destabilize the party. The statement specifically named Dr. Olu Agunloye and Professor Sadiq Umar Gombe among individuals allegedly parading themselves with unconstitutional national and state executives.
“These impostors should not be taken with any seriousness. Their behaviours are unacceptable, and we condemn in the strongest terms attempts to convene illegal meetings or persecute legitimate party officials using security agencies,” Modibbo said.
The party urged security agencies to respect the rule of law and avoid interference in its internal affairs, stressing that their duty is to protect lives and property without ethnic or political bias.
Similarly, the SDP called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain professionalism, warning against “strange behaviours” that could undermine internal democracy in Nigerian political parties.
Modibbo also lauded the steadfastness of members of the National Working Committee and State Executives across the federation, urging party faithful to put aside personal interests and remain united in the pursuit of progress and development.
“Long live the Social Democratic Party! Long live Nigeria!” the statement concluded.
