The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has secured a clean sweep in the Anambra South Senatorial and Onitsha North 1 State Assembly by-elections held on Saturday.

According to official results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, APGA won all wards in the seven local government areas of Anambra South and also claimed victory in the Onitsha North 1 Constituency.

The Anambra South Senate seat became vacant following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, while the Onitsha North 1 seat opened up after the killing of its former occupant, Justice Azuka.

In the senatorial contest, Emmanuel Nwachukwu of APGA polled 90,408 votes, defeating his closest rivals from the APC (19,812 votes) and YPP (6,538 votes). INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Frank Ojiako, declared Nwachukwu duly elected.

For the State House of Assembly seat, Prof. Ibiam Ekpe, the INEC Returning Officer, announced Ifeoma Azikiwe as the winner with 7,774 votes, defeating ADC’s Justice Azuka, who garnered 1,909 votes.

This historic victory marks the first time APGA will represent Anambra South in the Senate.

Reacting to the outcome, Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, expressed delight in a Facebook post, describing the result as a resounding endorsement of APGA.

“Yesterday, APGA swept the Anambra South Senatorial by-election, winning 99.99% of polling units and all 118 wards across seven LGAs,” Soludo wrote.
“In Onitsha North 1, we also won all eight wards. We do not take your support for granted.”

He congratulated both Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu and Mimi Ifeoma Azikiwe, applauding INEC and stakeholders for a peaceful and transparent process.

“Thank you, Ndi Anambra,” he added.
