The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially launched its Borno State chapter with a pledge to provide strong opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the unveiling in Maiduguri on Thursday, the state convener, Sheriff Banki, said the ADC was stepping in to fill the void left by weakened opposition parties in Borno. He accused the APC of systematically silencing dissent in the state.
“Borno has lacked true opposition, but with the unveiling of the ADC, that changes today. We are here to hold the government accountable and ensure democratic checks and balances,” Banki said.
He announced that the state chapter is aligning with a national coalition movement and pledged support for the eventual presidential candidate of the ADC in 2027.
“In the North-East, this movement is led by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, and in Borno, by Kashim Imam. We are adopting the ADC as the platform for change,” he said.
Banki added that the party is open to all Nigerians with progressive ideas and development goals, stating, “The manipulation that has held opposition parties back can be defeated with commitment and courage.”
The ADC also unveiled a list of notable defectors from other parties, including former governorship aspirants from the NNPP, former PDP treasurers, ex-state assembly members, and former party executives.
Banki concluded by emphasizing the party’s readiness to challenge the APC’s dominance in the state, urging citizens to rally behind the new movement for a more inclusive democracy.
