The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, will today witness the Olympic Marathon Walk—an initiative under the Nigeria Engineering Games. This yearly fitness-focused event is aimed at blending wellness with professional camaraderie, and it holds this Saturday.
Engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), who is also funding the event, expressed confidence that people from different age brackets across Nigeria would turn out in large numbers to participate.
While speaking with journalists in Abuja, Gumel mentioned his expectations for a vibrant turnout at the event, noting the role such initiatives play in encouraging a fit and healthy lifestyle.
“I would like to see not less than 250 people at this year’s event. I expect people of all ages to come, have fun, and use the walk to keep fit,” he stated.
Gumel further stressed the value of seeing key figures in Nigerian sports administration take part in the fitness walk. He shared his excitement that, for the first time, the leadership of the National Sports Commission would be actively involved in the activity.
“I am happy that for the first time, the Chairman and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olapade, respectively, will join me in leading the walk,” Gumel said.
As a former leader of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Gumel emphasized that the event serves as a platform for advancing the ideals of health, wellness, and physical strength among professionals and the public alike.
Participants have been instructed to converge for the commencement of the marathon by 8am at the Nigerian Society of Engineers’ headquarters, which is situated off Labour House Road and National Mosque Road in Abuja’s Central Business District.
This yearly gathering, which celebrates both athleticism and the engineering profession, reflects the Nigeria Olympic Committee’s continuous effort toward promoting sports at the grassroots level and encouraging Nigerians to embrace active lifestyles.
A diverse group including engineers, fitness lovers, and wellness advocates from all walks of life is expected to join the walk—demonstrating the power of community participation in encouraging consistent exercise and a healthier society.
