Nigeria’s head coach, Justine Madugu, has reaffirmed his determination to guide the Super Falcons to a record-extending 10th title at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, as they prepare for their second group fixture against Botswana on Thursday (today).
The Falcons barely broke a sweat in their opening game, cruising past Tunisia with a 3-0 win. A second consecutive victory at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium would guarantee them a place in the quarter-finals with one match still to play.
Botswana head into the tie still reeling from a narrow 1-0 loss to Algeria in their first outing — a game that coincided with Nigeria’s dominant performance over Tunisia, where goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide (on her debut), and Chinwendu Ihezuo secured the win.
“As I said before the commencement of the tournament, we remain focused on our Mission X and we believe that victory over Botswana is a huge possibility. We are taking it one match at a time without taking any team for granted,” Madugu told thenff.com.
During the last edition of WAFCON held in Morocco three years ago, the Super Falcons dismantled Botswana 2-0, with goals from Ifeoma Onumonu and Christy Ucheibe putting an end to Botswana’s dreams at the Stade Prince Moulay El Hassan.
Another triumph for the Nigerian team today will ensure they qualify for the knockout phase with one group match left to play.
Nigeria has an unmatched legacy at the continental showpiece, having won nine out of the 12 tournaments since it officially kicked off in 1998, and consistently reaching at least the semi-final stage in every edition they’ve competed in.
