Thomas Partey, a former midfielder for Arsenal, has been formally accused of several sexual offences by the Metropolitan Police, according to an announcement made on Friday.
The BBC reports that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has given the go-ahead for charges to proceed after reviewing an investigative file handed over by officers.
“The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan Police Service to charge a man after a file of evidence was submitted by detectives. The Met has issued a charge and requisition to Thomas Partey, 32 (13/06/1992), of Hertfordshire, in connection with the following offences: five counts of rape, one count of sexual assault,” the CPS stated.
The 32-year-old footballer, whose deal with the North London club officially ended earlier this week, is accused of carrying out the alleged offences during the years 2021 and 2022.
BBC also noted that Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is spearheading the case, reaffirmed that the well-being of the individuals involved is of utmost concern.
“Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team. You can contact detectives about this investigation by emailing CIT@met.police.uk,” he said.
Partey is expected to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 5, to face the charges brought against him.
