The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched a striking new trophy for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), representing a powerful leap forward for women’s football across Africa.
The trophy was unveiled Wednesday evening in Casablanca, Morocco, just before the tournament’s opening weekend. Its presentation symbolizes hope, unity, and ambition—mirroring the men’s AFCON trophy as a bold statement of parity and aspiration.
Designed with layered symbolism, the gleaming piece features silver and gold tones. It incorporates 12 distinct petal-shaped elements—each signifying one of the nations competing in the tournament—that together form the image of a flower in full bloom.
At its center lies a golden orb styled as a football, embellished with a gold-outlined African continent, highlighting both pride in heritage and a drive toward international recognition in the women’s game.
The base of the trophy is a spotless slab of white marble, etched with the tournament’s title. Surrounding it is a golden ring engraved with the CAF insignia—a visual declaration of the organization’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the women’s game across all member nations.
CAF stated that the timing of this trophy’s release reflects president Patrice Motsepe’s broader mission of placing African women’s football among the global elite.
“It also marks the beginning of a landmark edition of WAFCON, which has seen its prize money more than doubled to $2.4m. The tournament, which runs from July 5 to 26 across Morocco, will open with the hosts facing Zambia in Rabat, while nine-time champions Nigeria, defending champions South Africa and other top contenders prepare for another fiercely contested battle for continental supremacy.”
Nigeria remains the most decorated side in the tournament’s history, while South Africa and Equatorial Guinea are the only other nations to have lifted the title.
