The second installment of the Ecobank National Schools’ Team Chess Championship entered its second day on Friday with fierce competition, as Platform School claimed the top spot in the secondary school division.
After the primary school contests kicked off the event on Thursday, the battle for supremacy continued on Friday, featuring 134 secondary schools drawn from different regions of the country.
After six intense rounds, Platform School secured first place. Daysprings Secondary School followed closely behind in second, while Shima Academy rounded out the top three.
Coming in fourth was Chess in Slums Africa, an initiative currently under the mentorship of Tunde Onakoya.
St. Clement Secondary School Gbaiko secured the fifth spot, St. Gregory’s College landed in sixth, with The Ambassadors College Ota, Sasa Community Junior and Senior High School, Value Place College, and ABS College completing the top ten rankings.
Among the schools that earned special recognition were Kings College Lagos, who finished 19th; Indian Language School, placing 23rd; Queens College Lagos, which secured the 83rd position; and Corona Secondary School Agbara, finishing at 129th.
A total of 197 primary schools competed on day one, while 134 secondary schools clashed on the second day.
The grand finale, set for Saturday, will witness 32 universities and higher institutions vie for honors in the tertiary segment. The event boasts a combined prize pool of ₦20 million.
