The Lagos State Government has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to traders at Alabarago Market to address environmental violations or risk market closure.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the warning on Sunday during an inspection tour of the market and other areas, including Idi-Araba and Orile-Iganmu.
Wahab noted that Alabarago Market had previously been shut down for similar infractions. “We sealed this market last year for environmental issues. Unfortunately, we may be forced to do the same again if they don’t clean up within 24 hours,” he said.
He expressed concern that the market had become a dumping ground, with waste spilling onto roads and drainage systems blocked. “They’ve agreed to clear the area, and if they fail to do so by tomorrow evening, we will take enforcement action,” Wahab stated.
As Sallah approaches, the commissioner urges residents to maintain a clean environment and dispose of waste responsibly. “Let us celebrate responsibly by keeping our environment clean. Contain your waste and allow PSP operators to handle proper disposal,” he advised.
