WAEC Apologises for Late-Night English Exams, Blames Anti-Malpractice Efforts

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a public apology following widespread delays during the 2025 English Language exam, which saw many students writing the paper late into the night, some under torchlight and lanterns due to power outages.

Futhermore, in a statement on Thursday, WAEC explained that the delays were the result of intensified security measures aimed at preventing exam paper leaks. The English Language Paper 2, originally scheduled for May 28, was conducted hours behind schedule in numerous centers across Nigeria.

Social media was flooded with images and videos of students writing exams as late as 10 p.m., sparking criticism and concerns over the council’s preparedness and the safety of candidates.

WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, said maintaining exam integrity was a priority, even though it caused delays. “While we achieved our goal of preventing paper leakage, it unfortunately disrupted the exam’s timely administration,” Adesina said.

She also cited logistical challenges, security issues, and local sociocultural factors as additional reasons for the disruption.

WAEC assured the public that steps are being taken to avoid a recurrence, including collaboration with security agencies to streamline operations.

“We apologize to students, parents, and schools for the inconvenience and appreciate their patience during this difficult period,” the council stated.

The 2025 WASSCE for school candidates began on April 24 and is set to conclude on June 20.
