Reigning Nigeria Women Football League champions, Edo Queens, secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Abia Angels at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Wednesday.
The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Osigwu Goodness confidently slotted home a penalty to give the visitors the lead. Abia Angels responded with renewed determination, launching several attacks in search of an equalizer. However, the experienced Edo Queens stood their ground, frustrating the hosts’ offensive efforts. Goalkeeper Ademola Morufa played a pivotal role in keeping her side ahead, making crucial saves to deny the opposition.
The second half resumed with Edo Queens extending their advantage, as Esther Moses found the net in the 61st minute, silencing the home fans. Despite the setback, Abia Angels remained persistent and were rewarded in the 76th minute when Lucky Mary successfully converted a penalty, narrowing the deficit to 2-1.
Both sides continued to push for more goals, but the defenses held firm, ensuring the scoreline remained unchanged. With this crucial win, Edo Queens strengthened their position at the top of Group A, remaining unbeaten with 23 points from nine matches.
After the game, Edo Queens’ head coach, Moses Aduku, praised his players for their ability to convert goal-scoring opportunities.
He said, “First, I must say that the turf did not allow us to play good football. But I commend my girls for taking the chances they had. The Abia Ladies were also good because they were used to this field.
“Presently, our focus is on our next game against Heartland Queens next Wednesday. We take it one game at a time. When we are done with the Heartland game, then we can talk about others. I want to urge my players to continue with this winning mentality.”
“My dream is to play again in the CAF Champions League having lost in the semi-final of the last edition. We have to work seriously on our girls, but the first thing is to win the Super Six.”
