Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has urged his team to remain focused as they prepare for a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Zimbabwe on Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Following Nigeria’s 2-0 triumph over Rwanda in Kigali on Friday, Chelle stressed the importance of staying prepared for upcoming challenges.
The 47-year-old Malian, who took over as head coach of the three-time African champions in January, began his tenure on a high note. His side secured victory in their Group C encounter, thanks to two first-half goals from Victor Osimhen.
Despite celebrating the win, Chelle highlighted the necessity of ongoing development as the Super Eagles continue their push to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after a shaky start to the campaign.
The tactician demonstrated adaptability throughout the game, setting up his squad in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi controlled the midfield, while Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, and Osimhen led the attack.
As the match progressed, he made tactical changes, bringing in Raphael Onyedika for Chukwueze and later substituting the injured Bright Osayi-Samuel with Alhassan Yusuf.
Chelle acknowledged the team’s strengths and areas for improvement, emphasizing his responsibility to adjust strategies accordingly. He highlighted the importance of players being versatile and comfortable with different tactical approaches, stating that the squad used multiple systems during the game.
Despite limited time to train with the team, the former Mali coach expressed satisfaction with how quickly the players adapted to his methods.
Facing a well-organized Rwandan side, Chelle praised his team’s performance and the efforts of his staff, as well as the support from Nigerian fans. He noted that, despite having only a week and two training sessions to prepare, the players executed the game plan effectively, securing a well-deserved win.
The victory moved Nigeria to fourth place in Group C with six points from five matches, trailing South Africa (10 points), Benin (eight points), and Rwanda (seven points).
With the upcoming clash against Zimbabwe being a crucial encounter, Chelle is fully aware that any setback could significantly impact Nigeria’s chances of reaching the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
