Cameroon is set to take another major step toward securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they prepare to take on Eswatini at Mbombela Stadium in South Africa on Wednesday, March 19.
The Indomitable Lions currently sit atop Group D in the CAF qualifiers, having accumulated eight points from their first four matches. However, their lead remains slim, with Libya, Cape Verde, and Angola closely trailing. Their latest outing saw them settle for a 1-1 draw against Angola on June 11, 2024, following an impressive 4-1 triumph over Cape Verde just days earlier.
Boasting an impressive goal difference, Cameroon has strengthened their position in the group with commanding victories over Mauritius (3-0) and Cape Verde. This goal advantage places them ahead of both Libya and Angola—two teams that have also remained unbeaten thus far.
Libya managed to take valuable points off Cameroon in a 1-1 stalemate on November 21, 2023, and currently share second place with Cape Verde, both sitting just one point behind the group leaders.
Eswatini Faces an Uphill Battle
Eswatini’s hopes of reaching the World Cup for the first time in their history are hanging by a thread. The King’s Shield has endured a tough qualification campaign, having lost all four of their group matches since the qualifiers began in November 2023.
Head coach Zdravko Logarusic is still searching for his first victory since taking charge in August 2024. His tenure has been challenging, with Eswatini collecting only two points from six matches across all competitions, including their unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the tough run, Logarusic has had time to familiarize himself with his squad and will be eager to inspire a turnaround in the upcoming months. Offensively, Eswatini has struggled, managing just one goal in four qualifiers. Their most recent outing ended in a 2-1 loss to Mauritius on June 11, 2024, leaving them with a concerning minus-five goal difference.
As Cameroon looks to tighten their grip on the top spot, Eswatini faces the daunting challenge of keeping their qualification hopes alive.
