Human rights activist and former presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore, has expressed his support for Ushie Rita Uguamaye, also known as Raye, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member facing backlash over her viral video criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a video posted on X on Monday, Sowore shared that he had met with Uguamaye in Lagos and would accompany her to the NYSC Local Government Inspector’s office with a team of attorneys.
“The journey with youth corper, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, has started in Lagos,” Sowore wrote in the video’s caption. “She is scheduled to appear before the Local Government Inspector today, and we will be escorting her to their office, along with attorneys.”
Uguamaye went viral after posting a video on TikTok, where she expressed concern over Nigeria’s worsening economic situation and openly criticized Tinubu’s leadership. Following the video, she claimed to have received threats, sparking a wider conversation on free speech and political dissent in Nigeria.
Uguamaye also shared a screenshot of an invitation from the NYSC, asking her to appear before the Local Government Inspector at Eti Osa 3 on Monday at 10:00 a.m.
Sowore’s involvement has brought increased attention to Uguamaye’s case, raising concerns about the potential consequences she may face from the NYSC or other authorities. As of now, the NYSC has not issued an official statement on the matter.
