The Kano State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two individuals for impersonating its officers and using the disguise to intimidate and extort money from top government officials in the state.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Monday. He identified the suspects as 43-year-old Muhammad Sarari, a resident of Goron Dutse in Dala Local Government Area, and 32-year-old Madaki Zaharaddeen from Hotoro Quarters in Nassarawa Local Government Area.
According to Abdullahi, the suspects had been posing as NSCDC personnel and frequently storming ministries and government agencies in Kano to threaten officials into giving them money. Their fraudulent activities came to an end when they entered the premises of a well-known television station in the state, where they attempted to intimidate a top management staff member in exchange for cash.
Personnel from the NSCDC Tarauni Divisional Office apprehended the suspects and transferred them to the state headquarters for interrogation. During the investigation, they confessed to the crime. One of them was found in possession of a fake NSCDC identity card and an inner wear bearing the Corps’ logo.
The NSCDC has concluded its investigation and plans to charge the suspects with impersonation of a public servant, conspiracy, intimidation, and extortion.
