Lucky Aiyedatiwa has officially begun his first full four-year term as Governor of Ondo State following his swearing-in ceremony on Monday at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure. This marks the continuation of his leadership after initially assuming office in December 2023, following the passing of his predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu.
At the event, Aiyedatiwa took the oath of office alongside his deputy, Olayide Adelami. The governor later paraded the stadium in an open van, acknowledging cheers from his supporters.
Aiyedatiwa’s rise to power came after a decisive victory in the November 16, 2024, governorship election, where he ran under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He defeated his closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), by a landslide, securing 366,781 votes against Ajayi’s 117,845. The APC’s dominance was further reflected in its victory across all 18 local government areas of the state.
Before the election, Aiyedatiwa had been serving as governor since December 27, 2023, following Akeredolu’s demise. Having previously served as Akeredolu’s deputy, he stepped into the leadership role after the late governor transferred power to him due to his prolonged illness.
Born on January 12, 1965, in Obe-Nla, Ilaje Local Government Area, Aiyedatiwa has a strong academic and professional background. He attended Saint Peter’s Primary School in his hometown before completing secondary education at Ikosi High School, Ketu, Lagos, in 1982.
His higher education credentials include an NCE in Economics and Government from Lagos State College of Education, an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Ibadan, and an MBA from the University of Liverpool. He also earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Chief Executive Education from Lagos Business School.
Before entering politics, Aiyedatiwa built a career spanning education, pharmaceuticals, finance, and general trade. In 1996, he founded the Blue Wall Group of Companies, with interests in trading, foreign exchange, and travel logistics.
His political journey began in 2011 under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), which later merged into the APC. He served as a Federal Commissioner for Ondo State on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) board from 2018 to 2019. In 2020, he was elected deputy governor alongside Akeredolu.
Rotimi Akeredolu, who served as Ondo State governor from 2017 until his death in December 2023, succumbed to prostate cancer at the age of 67. His illness led him to transfer power to Aiyedatiwa before his passing, ensuring stability in the state’s leadership.
With his inauguration, Aiyedatiwa now embarks on a full term as governor, focusing on governance, development, and continuity of policies. His administration is expected to build on Akeredolu’s legacy while implementing new strategies for the state’s progress.
