The Lagos State Government has commenced a major clearance operation under the Idumota Bridge, targeting criminal hideouts and illegal activities in the area. The exercise, led by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), follows the expiration of notices served to illegal occupants.
Lagos Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development in a video shared on his X handle on Thursday. The footage showed LAGESC operatives dismantling makeshift structures while officials from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) carted away debris.
“Following the expiration of served notices, our dedicated Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, KAI, have commenced clearance operations under Idumota Bridge, which has been harboring criminal elements and other illegal activities,” Wahab stated.
He emphasized that the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and ensuring public safety remains steadfast. “Every step we take brings us closer to a cleaner, safer Lagos for all,” he added.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by the state to curb crime and maintain order in strategic locations. Residents and commuters have lauded the initiative, expressing hope that it will help reduce criminal activities in the area. Meanwhile, the government has warned against the resurgence of illegal structures, vowing sustained enforcement actions.
