Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stressed the importance of establishing a pension plan for Nigerian athletes to ensure their well-being after retirement. He highlighted the need for structured support systems to help athletes transition smoothly into life beyond their sporting careers.
Speaking at the Boma Invitational Golf Tournament in Yenagoa, Jonathan emphasized that many athletes struggle financially after retirement, despite their contributions to national pride. He urged policymakers and sports administrators to develop a framework that guarantees financial stability for retired sportsmen and women.
Jonathan pointed out that other professions have pension structures in place, and athletes should not be left out. He stressed that these individuals dedicate their youth to representing the country, and it is only fair that they receive adequate support when they can no longer compete.
He also praised the role of golf in fostering discipline, strategic thinking, and resilience, stating that sports, in general, play a significant role in shaping society. He encouraged increased investment in various sporting disciplines to provide more opportunities for young talents.
The former president reiterated his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sports development in Nigeria, emphasizing that athletes deserve better post-career security.
