Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Nigerian government to ensure transparency and accountability in the allocation of funds for the health sector in the 2025 budget. Atiku warned that the bizarre claims of animals such as snakes, gorillas, and monkeys swallowing public funds should not be allowed to become a recurring issue, especially in the critical health sector.
In a statement on Sunday, Atiku called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to clarify how the $1.07 billion intervention fund will be distributed. He emphasized the need for proper management and transparent usage of every kobo allocated to improve Nigeria’s healthcare system.
“At a time when resources are limited and healthcare services are facing reduced support, it is essential that every kobo budgeted for the health sector is fully utilized,” Atiku said. He expressed concerns over the lack of a clear framework outlining the expenditure of the $1.07 billion for primary healthcare.
Atiku criticized the government for failing to provide detailed information on how the funds would be used, urging that the budget should come with a well-structured policy framework to guide the disbursement and prevent any misuse.
The former Vice President stressed that healthcare investment is vital for improving access to quality services. He also highlighted the moral responsibility of the government to disclose how funds are spent, given the scale of the financial commitment.
“Nigerians deserve to know how these funds will be allocated and spent,” he said. “The budget must include a clear framework to ensure public accountability.”
Atiku’s statement comes amid concerns over transparency in government spending, especially after several reports of missing public funds linked to bizarre claims of animals being responsible. He is calling for stronger mechanisms of public auditing and accountability to safeguard the health sector budget.
