Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is optimistic about Nigeria’s prospects of claiming a fourth African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 2025, following the group draw held in Rabat, Morocco, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
The three-time AFCON champions have drawn a challenging group for the upcoming tournament, with Tunisia, and two of the co-hosts for the 2027 edition, Uganda and Tanzania, placed in Group C alongside them.
Troost-Ekong, who was named the Most Valuable Player at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast, believes that despite the tough draw, the team is well-equipped to go all the way in Morocco after finishing as runners-up last year.
“AFCON 2025 draw is now over, very exciting to see the group. Three teams that need to be respected,” Ekong remarked.
“I think we have the experience now to know how to handle the situations, there’s no such thing as an easy game in Africa. I stand by that but I believe we have everything to come out of this group and this time, go all the way.”
By the time the 2025 tournament kicks off in December, Nigeria will be under the guidance of new coach Franco-Malian Eric Chelle, who took over earlier this year. Troost-Ekong expressed confidence that the squad would adapt to the new management.
“We learnt a lot of things from Abidjan last year and this time we will be more ready and we are working hard throughout the year to make sure everyone is fit and ready and get going under the new coach.”
During the last AFCON in Ivory Coast, Troost-Ekong scored three goals, including one in the final. Unfortunately, his efforts were not enough to lead Nigeria to their fourth title.
Their quest for the elusive third title will start on December 23, against Tanzania at the Fez Stadium. A few days later, they will face Tunisia at the same venue, before playing Uganda on December 30.
Nigeria holds the record for the most AFCON titles in the group, having won the prestigious trophy three times and preparing for their 21st appearance in Morocco. Uganda will compete in their eighth tournament, while Tanzania has only participated three times.
Tunisia, the most familiar of the opponents, knocked out Nigeria in the round of 16 during the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon. They have one AFCON title to their name, having won on home soil in 2024, marking their 21st appearance in the continental competition.
The 2025 AFCON is scheduled to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
