The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is looking to enhance its collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to strengthen efforts against corruption and financial crimes in West Africa. Cheikh Toure, the country representative of UNODC, made this statement during a visit to EFCC chairperson Ola Olukoyede at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
According to a statement released by the EFCC via its X handle, Mr. Toure emphasized that this partnership with Nigeria’s anti-graft agency would facilitate knowledge sharing among West African nations to address the challenges posed by cybercrime, particularly in light of the complexities introduced by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“This is the only way we can enhance the safety and security of our children. The threats are numerous and complicated, especially with the advent of AI. Just think about AI in the hands of a cybercriminal manipulating bitcoins. What will our defense strategy be for investigating such cases? They will be far more intricate than past cases. New legal frameworks will be necessary to address these issues,” Mr. Toure stated.
He further highlighted that the changing landscape of crime necessitates international cooperation to investigate and recover illicit assets, particularly in nations with significant Nigerian investments. “The second aspect involves collaborating with countries where there are substantial Nigerian investments and where it is challenging to recover ill-gotten assets. I don’t want my tenure to be merely a UN framework. I am a technician, a product of West Africa, and I seek a practical partnership.
“My goal is to engage in a true partnership with you. Nigeria has a wealth of expertise that can help us achieve our objectives. Therefore, pursuing a strategic partnership is the most equitable approach,” he added.
Your point of view caught my eye and was very interesting. Thanks. I have a question for you.
