Some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have declared their support for the recent court ruling that nullified the party’s congresses in Rivers State.
The NWC members, led by the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, and National Treasurer, Ahmed Mohammed, made their position clear during a visit to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday night.
During the visit, which included a closed-door meeting, Mohammed reaffirmed Fubara’s status as the party leader in Rivers State. He described the visit as part of efforts to realign the party and strategize for success in the 2027 elections.
“We are committed to fostering unity, stability, and repositioning the PDP effectively in Rivers State,” Mohammed said, urging party stakeholders to rally behind Governor Fubara and other leaders for the progress of the party.
The NWC members also expressed their support for Ude Okoye, who was recently reinstated as the PDP National Secretary by the Court of Appeal. Mohammed called on party members and governors to work with Okoye to ensure the party’s growth.
This visit comes amid rising tensions within the PDP following the court’s decision to nullify the ward, local, and state congresses in Rivers State. These congresses, held last year, were heavily influenced by allies of Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor. The exercise was marred by conflicting court orders, with a State High Court halting the process while a Federal High Court permitted it.
The nullification has led to the emergence of an interim committee tasked with overseeing the party’s leadership in the state.
The NWC members’ visit follows a meeting earlier in the week between PDP Youth leaders and Governor Fubara, aimed at resolving the party’s internal crises and affirming his leadership.
With these developments, the PDP leadership in Rivers State remains at a crossroads as the party seeks to reposition itself ahead of the next general elections.
