Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, participated in the Houston Half-Marathon on Sunday, enduring freezing conditions of 1°C.
The governor completed the 21-kilometre race in 2 hours and 53 minutes, surpassing his previous performance at the 2022 Berkeley Half-Marathon in San Francisco, California.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Makinde expressed pride in his accomplishment despite the harsh weather.
“Happy to have finished the Houston Half-Marathon in 2 hours and 53 minutes today,” he wrote. “Despite the freezing temperature of 1°C, I improved on my time from the Berkeley Half-Marathon, which I ran nearly two years ago. I also participated in a 5k fun run yesterday, completing it in 38 minutes.”
The Houston Half-Marathon is part of the annual Chevron Houston Marathon event, which attracts thousands of participants worldwide.
The marathon includes three main races: a full marathon, a half-marathon, and a 5-kilometre race. It draws over 200,000 spectators, who line the streets to cheer for the runners.
This year, Ethiopian athlete Addisu Gobena clinched the men’s half-marathon title with an impressive time of 59 minutes and 17 seconds.
Although not competing for medals, Governor Makinde joined the determined crowd of runners, demonstrating resilience and commitment.
Renowned for its fast, flat course and vibrant crowd support, the Houston Marathon creates an electrifying atmosphere. Future events, such as the 2025 Chevron Houston Marathon’s Run for Autism, will offer benefits like guaranteed entry, tailored training programs, and exclusive memorabilia, as stated by the organisers.
