The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) took action on Friday by closing down Cyvillian Garden, a well-known leisure destination on Abacha Road, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, due to excessive noise pollution.
The decision to seal off the location followed numerous complaints from local residents and the facility’s failure to address the issue despite multiple warnings.
Dr. Innocent Barikor, NESREA’s Director General, represented by Dr. Christopher Beka, the Director of Inspection and Enforcement, explained that the agency had taken all the required steps before resorting to the closure. “We thoroughly investigated the complaints from the residents, conducted noise level measurements at various times, and found them to be well above acceptable limits for a residential area. Notices were then issued for the facility to rectify the situation as per legal requirements. Furthermore, we held a mediation session where we advised them to operate in compliance with the National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations of 2009,” Beka stated.
He emphasized the importance of tackling noise pollution, describing it as a significant concern that impacts public health. “It is unacceptable for people to return home after a busy day and be unable to rest due to disturbing noise. One should not run a business or seek enjoyment at the cost of the well-being of others,” Barikor added. He reiterated NESREA’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Nigerians through effective environmental regulation and enforcement, pledging that further enforcement actions would be taken nationwide.
