On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, tensions escalated in Benin City as gunshots erupted near the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal. The incident occurred on Reservation Street, adjacent to the High Court complex, causing panic among passersby and disrupting tribunal proceedings.
A viral online video shows a youth wearing a cap branded with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) logo emerging from an unregistered white Toyota Hilux van. The individual loaded bullets into a pump-action rifle and fired multiple shots into the air, shouting, “Give us our mandate,” before fleeing the scene with an accomplice.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) swiftly condemned the act, alleging that PDP supporters were responsible. APC Chairman Jarrett Tenebe described the incident as a “deeply disturbing and unacceptable act of violence,” emphasizing that such actions undermine the legal system’s integrity.
In response, the PDP denied involvement, accusing the APC of orchestrating the violence to tarnish the PDP’s image. Tony Aziegbemi, Acting Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Edo State, stated that the party had directed its supporters to avoid the tribunal proceedings, anticipating potential provocations.
The tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, is currently hearing seven petitions challenging the declaration of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the APC as the winner of the 2024 Edo State Governorship Election. Proceedings have been adjourned to January 17, 2025, to allow parties to prepare for the presentation of documents.
Authorities have yet to apprehend the individuals involved in the shooting. Both parties are calling for a thorough investigation to ensure the safety and integrity of the tribunal process.
