Civil rights advocate and political figure, Senator Shehu Sani, has called on Nigerians and all tiers of government to recognize and honor the freedom fighters who stood firm in defense of the nation. Addressing reporters on Monday, Sani made this appeal during a visit to the burial sites of six dethroned Emirs in Lokoja, who resisted British colonial rule.
Accompanied by fellow activist Comrade Suleiman Ahmed, Senator Sani emphasized the importance of acknowledging these historical figures for their unwavering courage. “Today, I am here at the resting places of Northern Nigerian Emirs who were ousted by British colonialists and exiled to Lokoja, where they ultimately passed away. Among them is the late Emir of Kano, Mallam Aliyu Abdullahi (Maisango), who died in 1903,” he stated.
He underscored the need to honor the legacy of these freedom fighters, saying, “It is crucial for us to value the sacrifices made by those who stood up for our nation. As someone who has been deeply involved in the fight for human rights, justice, and freedom, and who holds history in high regard, I am here to pay tribute to these noble Emirs who gave their all for our country. This visit serves as a reminder to Nigerians to look back with gratitude and draw inspiration from their courage as we chart our path forward as a nation.”
Senator Sani further highlighted the significance of these leaders’ defiance against colonial subjugation. “The Emirs buried here were not overthrown by their own people but by colonial forces intent on enslaving our nation and seizing its resources. These leaders stood firm for freedom and the protection of our land, and we owe them immense gratitude for their sacrifices.”
As a former Senator representing Kaduna Central from 2015 to 2019, Sani reiterated his dedication to celebrating and honoring Nigeria’s freedom fighters.
During the visit, the Etsu Lokoja, Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda-Shelika, and other community leaders commended the Senator’s gesture. They guided him and his team around the tombs, expressing their appreciation for the visit.
“The distinguished Senator Shehu Sani and his colleague, Comrade Suleiman Ahmed, have undertaken a significant and commendable effort. This gesture is highly appreciated as it sheds light on the contributions of those who came before us,” Dauda-Shelika remarked.
He further noted, “It is easy to forget the sacrifices made by certain individuals in history. This visit to the tombs of the deposed Emirs in Lokoja is both timely and meaningful. As a staunch advocate for human rights, the Senator has recognized these Emirs as leaders who courageously defended their people—a true testament to the essence of leadership.”
