Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has sworn in three judges Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe who were previously rejected by the former administration under Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The ceremony, which took place at the Festival Hall in the Government House, marked a significant step towards fulfilling the Governor’s promise to address past injustices and rectify issues within the judicial appointment process. This follows the swearing-in of five judges earlier in May this year.
Governor Okpebholo, during the ceremony, reiterated his commitment to the independence and integrity of the judiciary. He recalled how the National Judicial Council (NJC) had recommended eight candidates for appointment to the Edo State High Court in June 2023. However, the former administration only swore in five of the recommended candidates, leaving out three who had been cleared by the NJC.
“The issue of these three judges not being appointed was an oversight of the past administration,” Governor Okpebholo said. “No one should be discriminated against, marginalised, or rejected for personal reasons or because they lack political connections.”
The Governor emphasized the judiciary’s vital role within the framework of the Separation of Powers, a principle he vowed to uphold throughout his administration. He further highlighted the importance of ensuring that those who take the bench maintain high standards of professionalism, fairness, and impartiality in administering justice.
“In my inaugural speech, I made a promise to look into this issue and today, we are gathered to right the wrong. These three judges will now have the opportunity to sit with their colleagues and carry out their duties as trusted custodians of justice in Edo State,” the Governor added.
Governor Okpebholo expressed his belief that the judiciary must serve as a beacon of hope for the people, ensuring that citizens’ rights are protected and that justice is served swiftly and impartially.
On behalf of the three newly appointed judges, Ojo Maureen Osa expressed gratitude to the Governor for the opportunity to serve, noting that the swearing-in occurred just three weeks into his tenure. She assured that they would carry out their responsibilities without fear or favour, and pledged to work towards advancing justice in Edo State.
“We are grateful for this opportunity,” Osa said. “We will dispense justice fairly and impartially, and we pray for the success of your administration in promoting justice for all.”
Governor Okpebholo’s actions signal a strong commitment to strengthening the judiciary in Edo State, ensuring that the rule of law remains the cornerstone of governance under his leadership.
