President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended a warm reception to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja. Modi, who landed in Abuja on Saturday evening, was formally received at the Villa’s Forecourt at approximately 10:20 am on Sunday.
The Indian leader’s arrival was marked by the rendition of India’s national anthem. Following this, a Guard of Honour, organized by the Brigade of Guards, presented the Nigerian national anthem and escorted Modi as he reviewed the ceremonial parade.
A 21-gun salute added grandeur to the occasion before Prime Minister Modi concluded his inspection of the Guard of Honour. President Tinubu then guided him into his office, where the two leaders held a private discussion.
Their meeting focused on fostering stronger ties through the signing of key agreements. In addition, delegation-level talks and the formal exchange of memoranda of understanding were also scheduled as part of the visit.
The Presidency highlighted the significance of the event, emphasizing that it aimed to enhance the partnership between the two countries. “Prime Minister Modi and President Tinubu will build on the existing relationship between Nigeria and India, with plans to sign MOUs that will advance cooperation in critical areas,” the statement said.
This marks the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Nigeria since 2007, when Dr. Manmohan Singh’s historic visit established a strategic partnership between the two nations.
