The Anambra State Government has pledged to track down those responsible for the cult-related killings that took place in the Nibo community, located in Awka South Local Government Area, on Sunday.
The violent attack, which left at least 13 people dead, occurred when suspected cult members stormed an area near the site of the community’s New Yam festival, known as the ‘Nibo onwa asaa’ festival. According to reports, the assailants arrived in a Lexus 300 jeep and opened fire on festivalgoers near the Oye Nwochichi Market, close to Nibo Old Maternity, killing eight people on the spot. They then moved to another location where more casualties were reported.
In a press release on Monday, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, acknowledged the tragic incident, stating that the government has begun efforts to apprehend the culprits.
The statement read, “The Anambra State Government is aware of the deaths resulting from the alleged cult-related violence that occurred in Nibo, Awka South LGA, on Sunday, October 20, 2024. This is yet another incident in a recent string of cult-related crimes, and the government is committed to putting an end to this violence.”
The government expressed condolences to the victims’ families and reassured them that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
“We urge the public to provide any valuable information that could aid in the arrest of those responsible, with assurances of confidentiality and a substantial reward,” the statement continued.
Mefor also advised residents to continue with their daily activities without fear, as the government collaborates with security agencies to address the situation. He added that hotlines will soon be available for the public to report any information related to this and similar incidents.
