The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a significant change to its admission policy, adjusting the minimum age requirement for the 2024/2025 academic session.
According to Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB Spokesperson, institutions can now admit candidates who will turn 16 by August 31, 2025, provided they meet the institution’s standards. This decision reverses the initial policy that set the minimum admission age at 18 years for next year.
Some institutions had refused to admit students under 18, despite the agreed upon policy. However, JAMB’s new directive aims to ensure equal opportunities for all candidates.
Dr. Benjamin assured that this decision does not compromise the standard or infringe on individual institution’s admission policies. Institutions that have set their own minimum age of not less than 16 years can maintain their policy.
This new development is set to give more opportunities to younger candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
