N14M Not Enough, Says Senator Orji Kalu

Former Governor of Abia State and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Kalu, disclosed that his monthly earnings as a National Assembly member amount to N14 million.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, the former Senate Chief Whip shared details about his earnings.

Kalu explained that the N14 million he receives each month barely covers his expenses, which include fuel for trips to his constituency, maintaining his office, and paying his staff. “I receive N14 million monthly, covering everything – overhead costs, staff salaries, and all other expenditures,” he explained.

The senator also refuted public perceptions that lawmakers live extravagantly while ordinary Nigerians face financial hardship.

Additionally, Kalu rejected claims that National Assembly members receive personal official vehicles, clarifying that only committee members are provided with vehicles for official duties. “I’m a sitting Senator, and I hear a lot of things said about us, but many of them are simply untrue. The only vehicles provided are for committee use; no individual lawmaker receives one,” he clarified.
