Protests Erupt in Port Harcourt Ahead of Local Government Election

Demonstrations broke out at the Peoples Democratic Party secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, as tensions increased in anticipation of the Local Government election set for October 5, 2024.

A significant number of protesters gathered at the party’s office, prompting security personnel to intervene to control the crowd and address traffic issues in the vicinity, as reported by Channels Television.

This unrest stems from increasing worries about the delayed release of the 2023 Voters’ Register from the Independent National Electoral Commission to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.

In related news, The PUNCH previously reported that Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a ruling on September 30, 2024, which prohibited INEC from providing the voters’ register to RSIEC due to ongoing legal disputes.

Despite this court decision, Governor Siminalayi Fubara asserted that the election would proceed as scheduled.

Fubara expressed assurance that a previous ruling from the Supreme Court, which required all states to have democratically elected local government leaders, bolsters his stance.
