Enugu Govt Probes Oriokpa Masquerade Group’s Violent Activities

The Enugu State Government has launched a comprehensive investigation into the violent activities of the Oriokpa Masquerade group, following reports of two fatalities and widespread disturbance in Nsukka Local Government Area.

Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Okey Ogbodo, confirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining public safety and holding perpetrators accountable. The affected communities have witnessed pandemonium, bodily harm, and fatalities due to the masqueraders’ actions.

Governor Peter Mbah has directed the Commissioner of Police to investigate the incidents and bring those responsible to justice. Traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the affected communities have been summoned to meet with the Commissioner to address the issue and ensure accountability.

The Enugu State Government emphasized that it will not tolerate further excesses from any group or individual. “Our people should never be made to live in fear,” the statement read. The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and security, warning of commensurate sanctions against further excesses.

The investigation and meetings aim to restore order and ensure public safety in the affected areas. The state government commiserates with families of those who lost their lives in circumstances connected with the activities of the masquerades.
