A dynamite explosion hit the Action People’s Party secretariat along the GRA axis in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, early Monday morning.
The blast occurred around 1 a.m., when the assailants reportedly hurled what are believed to be dynamite devices at the building. The explosion shattered windows and doors and caused significant damage to party property.
This incident comes amid rumours that State Governor Siminalayi Fubara may be preparing to move his support to the APP due to the alleged takeover of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state by his predecessor and former political mentor, Nyesom Wike.
Punch correspondent, who visited the site, noted that the ceiling and fittings in the building were also damaged, and some party officials were seen discussing the situation.
A party official, who chose to remain anonymous, told a Punch reporter that the incident was politically motivated.
He said, “Yes, I’m a member of the APP. I was informed about the attack around 3 a.m. today.”
“This attack is clearly politically motivated. There’s no doubt about it. The APP is rapidly growing in the state, and this seems to be an attempt to undermine us. We urge the police to investigate this thoroughly and apprehend those responsible.”
When reached for comment, Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state police command, said she was not yet aware of the incident but promised to look into it and update our correspondent.
