Belal Muhammad, the newly crowned UFC welterweight champion, is targeting a possible showdown with former champion Kamaru Usman for his inaugural title defense. After recently seizing the championship by defeating Leon Edwards at UFC 304, Muhammad is keen to defend his title without delay, contrasting with many fighters who typically take a break after reaching the top.
During his visit to UFC Abu Dhabi this past weekend, Muhammad reflected on his victory in Manchester and mentioned two potential opponents for his initial title defense. “Either option works for me, right? Usman is certainly a major consideration for legacy,” Muhammad stated.
“He’s one of the most significant figures in the division, just below GSP, and I believe he still has something left to offer, despite his narrow losses to Leon and Khamzat.” Muhammad recognizes Usman’s prominence and historical impact on the sport, noting, “His name carries weight. But I’m also keen to face the so-called ‘boogeyman.’”
“The ‘boogeyman’ that everyone says is unbeatable and can walk through anyone… I anticipated that after my win over Leon, they would claim Shavkat would easily handle me. I’m determined to prove otherwise. Dana White, I’m ready whenever you are—just give me the time and the date.”
