For the second time within a span of 15 months, the family of former Defence Minister, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd), has generously contributed a state-of-the-art girls’ hostel to the University of Benin.
During the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, praised the Danjuma family’s commitment to supporting the education of young women.
She stated, “Today, we are here to honor an extraordinary individual. It is rare to find someone who continuously gives back to society with such dedication. When we first approached Daisy and General Theophilus Danjuma about our need for a hostel, they graciously promised one, which was inaugurated by Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on April 29, 2023. Following the inauguration, Daisy Danjuma surprised us by proposing a second hostel. We initially thought it was a jest, but the foundation was laid shortly after, proving her seriousness.
“Now, as we celebrate Daisy’s 72nd birthday, she has pledged to build a third hostel. At this rate, by the time she turns 90, we might see Senator Daisy Danjuma hostels all across UNIBEN.” The vice-chancellor also expressed optimism that the Danjuma family would consider fulfilling the male students’ request for a boys’ hostel.
In his speech, Andy Ehanire, representing the donors, conveyed that the Danjuma family feels a deep sense of obligation towards the university. Ehanire lauded the institution for awarding honorary doctoral degrees to the former minister and his wife, acknowledging their significant contributions.
