On Thursday, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency officially reported the tragic deaths of three construction workers following a building collapse at Arowojobe Estate in the Maryland area. Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency’s Permanent Secretary, confirmed this unfortunate incident in a statement provided to the News Agency of Nigeria.
The collapse occurred specifically at No. 13, Wilson Mba Street, Arowojobe Estate, Maryland, Lagos. Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu specified that the deceased individuals were male site workers found within the collapsed structure.
“The agency was alerted to a collapsed building at the specified address around 3:49 am through a distress call.
“This prompted the immediate mobilization of the agency’s response team to the scene, arriving at 3:58 am.
“Upon assessment, it was found that a group of three terraces, which were under construction, had collapsed.”
Following the building collapse in Arowojobe, Maryland, rescue efforts commenced immediately. According to a statement from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) provided to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the situation involved intensive search and rescue operations.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, reported that three adult males were tragically found deceased, while two male adults were successfully rescued alive. Additionally, one adult male who was trapped under the rubble was also rescued from the collapsed structure.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu highlighted the collaborative efforts of LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire Service in carrying out the rescue operations. He noted that all six individuals affected by the collapse were site workers.
Currently, the rescued individuals are receiving immediate medical attention at the incident site. The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit has been notified to handle the retrieval of the remains of the three fatalities.
A coordinated team comprising personnel from LASEMA, the fire service, and the Nigeria Police Force is actively working at the scene. To expedite the search and rescue operations, LASEMA has deployed an excavator.
