The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have vowed to proceed with their planned protest on Tuesday, demanding the payment of salary arrears owed to their members.
Despite a meeting with the Federal Government on Thursday, the unions claim that their demands have not been met, and they will “hit the ground running” with their protests across the country. The unions had previously embarked on a warning strike in March, but negotiations with the government have failed to yield a resolution.
“We have not heard anything from the government, and our members are ready to take action,” said NASU National President Makolo Hassan on Channels Television’s Politics Today. “We will protest in our branches nationwide on Tuesday, and then take the demonstration to Abuja on July 18. If our demands are not met, we will reassess our next line of action.”
The unions are demanding the immediate payment of four months’ withheld salaries, and have threatened to shut down campuses nationwide if their demands are not met within two weeks.
The protest is expected to take place in various branches of the unions across the country, with the national protest in Abuja scheduled for July 18. The unions have accused the Federal Government of failing to address their demands, despite previous negotiations.
