In a move to restore order and ensure smooth traffic flow, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority seized 40 vehicles (25 commercial and 15 private) operating illegal garages and causing road obstructions in Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota areas.

This information was shared in a statement by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on X.com on Friday. The enforcement team of LASTMA, led by Mr. Kayode Odunuga, conducted the operation under the guidance of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa.

The team specifically targeted illegal garages that had been leading to persistent traffic congestion and inconvenience for residents and commuters.

Giwa mentioned that this action is part of a larger effort to improve the city’s transportation system and uphold order on the roads.

He said, “Illegal garages have been a significant challenge in our quest to maintain a seamless traffic flow in Lagos. These impoundments send a strong message to all offenders that the state will not tolerate activities that disrupt public order and endanger the lives of our citizens.”

“Our goal is to create a safe and orderly environment for all road users and this action is a crucial step in that direction.”

The targeted areas, Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota, are known hotspots for traffic congestion due to unauthorised parking and the establishment of makeshift garages.

According to the statement, the illegal garages and unauthorized parking not only block the free movement of vehicles but also pose safety risks to pedestrians. LASTMA’s intervention aims to eliminate these dangers, alleviate congestion, and enhance traffic flow in these areas. Local residents and business owners have voiced their support for the government’s actions, acknowledging the significant advantages it will bring to their daily routines. LASTMA has reassured the public that this operation will be ongoing and expanded to other parts of the city where illegal garages and associated activities are widespread.

Giwa encouraged all vehicle owners and operators to comply with the state’s traffic regulations and collaborate with authorities to evade sanctions. He emphasized that the government’s main goal is to establish a more improved and habitable Lagos for all.

Additionally, he urged motorists to assume responsibility for the roads and promptly notify LASTMA of any broken down or abandoned trailers.
