Mrs. T.A.Y. Lawson, the Branch Controller for Ekiti at the West Africa Examinations Council, has assured that the upcoming nationwide strike will not disrupt examinations in Ekiti State or across the country.
In a letter titled “Notice of Commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC” with reference number EK/BC/SC/EXAM/07/Vol.1/89, sent late Friday to Principals and school heads in Ekiti State, Lawson addressed concerns about the strike’s impact. PUNCH Online reports that the examination timetable in Nigeria started on Tuesday, April 30, and will conclude on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
The letter indicated that the Management has been notified about the indefinite strike by the NLC and TUC, which is set to commence on Monday, June 3, 2024. Despite this, Lawson emphasized that the WASSCE SC 2024 exams will continue as scheduled.
Lawson acknowledged the difficulties faced by the unions and expressed sympathy, stressing that students should not be adversely affected by the strike. She noted the importance of ensuring that the ongoing examinations in Nigeria and other West African countries proceed without interruption.
The letter urged School Principals, supervisors, parents, and the public to ensure that students are prepared for the exams. Lawson emphasized that WAEC will conduct the exams as planned and advised all concerned parties to take appropriate measures to facilitate this. The PUNCH Online further reported that the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress announced the strike on Friday due to a deadlock in negotiations over the proposed new minimum wage.
