According to PUNCH Sports Extra, Nigerian striker Asisat Oshoala has been named the 2023–24 UEFA Women’s Champions League best goal winner.
In Barcelona’s opening group game against Benfica, Oshoala scored an incredible bicycle kick, which helped the Catalans win the Champions League for the second year in a row.
As the Blaugrana led 4-0 at the half, Jonatan Giráldez threw the reigning Women’s African Footballer of the Year into the match, and she did not waste any time in making an impression. She scored the game’s final goal in style, which turned out to be her lone goal of the competition.
She then transferred to American team Bay FC in the middle of the season.
On Monday, UEFA declared that, out of all the goals chosen, Oshoala’s was the greatest.
“The top 10 goals of the 2023/24 UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign have been selected by UEFA’s Technical Observer panel, with Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala taking the prize for Goal of the Season thanks to her stunning bicycle kick for Barcelona against Benfica on Matchday 1,” it wrote on their website.
“Also for Barça, midfielder Aitana Bonmatí took second spot for her bending effort in the quarter-finals second-leg win against Brann, while Lyon’s Delphine Cascarino came third for her long-range strike in the quarter-finals second-leg victory over Benfica.”
Oshoala became the first African to win three UEFA Women’s Champions League titles with Barcelona Femení.
Despite moving to Bay FC in the United States during the middle of the season, the 29-year-old was awarded a winner’s medal. Prior to her transfer, the Super Falcons striker participated in two group-stage games for Barcelona and scored once to help the team win the Champions League.
